ABA/CEELI Serbia
The American Bar Association Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI), provides support of the rule of law throughout Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia and the Middle East. With offices in 23 countries, CEELI has organized hundreds of interactive training workshops, helped establish judicial training centers and public advocacy centers, and analyzed hundreds of draft laws and constitutions.
CEELI initiated its program in Serbia in 1997 with the placement of its first rule of law liaison in Belgrade. CEELI has been instrumental in helping Serbia’s legal professionals reestablish the rule of law in Serbia and today centers its programs in the areas of judicial, legal profession reform, prosecutors, magistrates and war crimes.
As a part of its rule of law initiatives, in 2006 CEELI is promoting mediation as a new means of solving disputes through mediation trainings for judges and attorneys throughout Serbia. CEELI’s trainings for judges are created in order to utilize the new Law on Mediation and to educate judges on appropriate practices and techniques to encourage settlements. CEELI’s trainings for attorneys are designed to introduce attorneys to mediation and to educate attorneys on the best practices in meeting interests of their clients.
CEELI’s mediation trainings for judges and attorneys, as key players in the justice system, are complementing projects done by other organisations in Serbia that mostly focus on trainings of mediators.
